Letter: Fight for care
I would like to take a moment and say a HUGE “Thank You” to all the doctors, nurses and staff at the Baystate Franklin Medical Center Emergency Department for all their help this past week as my son was/is very sick and although it was a bit of an ordeal in that they could not locate the source of his chronic chest pain.
As his mom, I had to do a lot of advocating for his admission into a hospital in the Boston area. My son has had many health problems over the past 10 years, including two pneumothorax and one pleuodesis. He also had a ruptured appendix as a child and almost died and was sent home from the school he attended with a detention for not taking gym. A very short time later, he was in emergency surgery at FMC. He has developed severe anxiety from all this and over the years his condition has exacerbated itself. As it is a condition that is very real, it also needs attention and care. I stood up for my son and he is now getting the help he has for so long not gotten. I encourage anyone dealing with addiction, advocate greatly for themselves or their family members, if there is enough people on the same page, then maybe the insurance companies will get the idea, that this is an area that needs great change.
