Panthers drill Athol on softball diamond
Pioneer Valley Regional School scored three times in the first inning and never looked back as it rolled to a 10-2 victory over Athol High School in a Franklin County League softball contest on Tuesday in Northfield.
Taylor Flaherty scored on four-base error, Shea Healy slammed a solo home run and Chianne Hebert stroked an RBI single in the opening frame for the Panthers (7-7 overall, 6-5 FCL).
Jackie LaFleur broke the game open by capping the four-run sixth with a three-run homer.
Flaherty finished with three of Pioneer’s 11 hits and drove in a run. LaFleur also tripled and Healy had two hits.
Tessa Neverett led the Red Raiders with a single, triple and an RBI. Olivia Smith added two hits.
Healy struck out six and did not walk a batter in the complete-game win.
Trisha Hazen, who fanned six and walked one, was tagged with the loss.
Turners 4, Mohawk 1 — Turners Falls High School won its 10th match of the season, downing Mohawk Trail Regional High School, 4-1, in independent boys’ tennis play on Tuesday in Buckland.
The Indians cruised to singles wins at No. 1, where Summer Forest-Bulley bested Thomas Aurigemma, 6-1, 6-0, and at No. 2, where Ken Leng defeated Zach Arfa, 6-1, 6-1.
Turns also swept the doubles, as Liam Ellis and Sam Danford whitewashed Dante Gardner and Evan Bruffee, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1, and Alex Gheorgita and Avery Palmer beat Robbie Buonoconti and Eric Shattuck, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 2.
The Warriors won their lone point at third singles, as Jake Pieffer defeated Spencer Hubert, 6-3, 6-3.
Chicopee Comp 4, Greenfield 1 — Chicopee Comprehensive High School won a trio of three-set matches en route to a 4-1 victory over Greenfield High School in an independent boys’ tennis match Tuesday in Chicopee.
Paris Felogloy won the Green Wave’s only match, beating Andrew Sulewski 6-2, 6-3, at first singles.
Putnam 3, Athol 2 — Athol missed a chance to clinch a playoff berth when it fell behind 2-0 and eventually dropped a 28-26, 25-22, 22-25, 26-28, 15-11 verdict to Putnam Vocational High School in a PVIAC Eastern Division boys’ volleyball match Tuesday in Springfield.
Jose Sierra played a phenomenal match for the Red Raiders in the setback, recording 67 digs to go along with three kills.
Lorenzo Carra dished out 16 assists and had the only service ace, Wyatt Doiron-LaRue had 12 kills, three blocks and served 100 percent (20-for-20) with 13 points, Tyler Lajoie collected six kills, 16 assists and served 100 percent (19-for-19), and Erik Aikey contributed 11 kills and four blocks.
Athol (9-7, 2-3 East) hosts Chicopee High School Friday at 5.
