Sunderland police cruiser damaged
Hits utility pole during high-speed car chase
SUNDERLAND — A one-year-old police cruiser will need repairs after it crashed into a utility pole as it chased a speeding vehicle this past weekend.
Police arrested Daniel Dickinson, 19, of Poplar Hill Road, Whately, on charges of speeding, failure to stop for police and operating a motor vehicle to endanger, according to Officer Evan Golann.
At 1:29 a.m. Sunday, Officer Josh Wingler was monitoring traffic speed from Route 116 in a rest area by Snowzees Bar when he clocked Dickinson in his 2006 Hyundai Sonata speeding by at 89 mph.
Police pursued Dickinson’s vehicle northbound onto Old Amherst Road and left onto Russell Street.
At 259 Russell St., the suspect’s vehicle hit and split a pole, then crashed into a tree and spun around. The 2012 Chevy Tahoe then sideswiped the same pole on the vehicle’s passenger side.
Dickinson’s car was totaled. The police cruiser had damage on the passenger side door.
According to Golann, the cruiser doesn’t appear to have frame damage. He believed the new vehicle would not be totaled.
Town Administrator Margaret Nartowicz did not want to comment on the crash. She did not know yet what the cost to fix the cruiser would be to the town.
