Spaces available for new diabetes workshop
There are still spaces available for a new self-management workshop on diabetes — and Franklin County Home Care Corp. officials say they need more attendees to sign up in order to run it.
The workshop, similar to others Home Care organizes throughout the year, will teach a small group how to gain control over their diabetes. Participants set small, realistic goals for self-improvement each week and then work with another to help realize those goals.
“(We’re) launching this for the very first time in western Massachusetts,” said Healthy Aging Coordinator Lesley Kayan. “We really want this to be a success.”
The workshop is set to begin Wednesday at the Northfield Senior Center at 69 Main St. It would run every Wednesday, from 12:15 p.m. to 2:45 p.m., concluding with a June 19 session.
Topics of discussion include: defining diabetes, monitoring glucose levels, healthy eating, preventing low blood sugar, preventing complications, physical activity and exercise, muscle relaxation, pain and fatigue management, dealing with difficult emotions, medication usage, making informed treatment decisions and weight management.
The workshops will use the “Diabetes Self-Management Program,” which was developed at the Stanford University Patient Education Research Center.
