Greenfield Farmers Market resumes on Saturday

GREENFIELD — Starting Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Court Square and the town common will once again be bustling with farmers and shoppers as the Greenfield Farmers Market opens for the season with 25 vendors.

There will be starter vegetable plants, hanging baskets, perennial and annual flower plants, herb plants and culinary herbs, mixed greens, baby spinach, microgreens, honey, maple syrup, homemade jams, fresh baked breads, cookies, grass-fed lamb, beef, goat, pork, locally raised poultry and, new this year, sustainable Cape Cod fish.

As the season progresses, there will be an extensive variety of other vegetables along with a wide range of fruit.

There’s more than food at the farmers market. There are also hand-wrought iron trellises and arbors, herbal skin care products, yarn, sheep skins, as well as roving and visiting artisan vendors that vary each week.

Local musicians play, and gardening and cooking workshops are held. From 10 a.m. to noon this week, West County Jazz performs straight ahead jazz: standards from the Great American Songbook, contemporary jazz classics from Miles Davis, Thelonius Monk, Wayne Shorter, as well as Latin, bebop, and some originals thrown in.

The Western Massachusetts Master Gardener Association will be at the market offering soil testing, answering questions, teaching how to plant vegetable seeds, and sharing information with home gardeners. For information about how to take a soil sample, see www.wmassmastergardeners.org.
