GREENFIELD — Local firefighters achieved more efficient scalp ventilation in the name of charity on Sunday, continuing the Greenfield department’s recent tradition of raising money for the St. Baldrick’s foundation.

St. Baldrick’s raises money through volunteer-organized head-shaving events, channeling funds to research and fight childhood cancer.

Sunday afternoon, a number of Greenfield firefighters joined a mass hair cut at Rafters Sports Bar in Amherst, while those on duty didn’t take the excuse to avoid baldness.

Turners Falls Fire Capt. John Whitney and four others on duty Sunday had their heads shaved at the fire station, joined by Whitney’s children, ages 6 and 8.

Whitney wasn’t sure how much the department raised including individual contributions, but said a raffle brought in $8,400.
