Editorial: Moving on

Brief thoughts on some of the events making news from around Franklin County and the North Quabbin area:

Dateline the area: We don’t know if Annie Cheatham’s decision to leave as executive director of the New England Farmers Union was something that people saw coming or not. But as was the case in her former work with CISA, the farm aid group, we know that the union is likely to miss her leadership. And whatever she decides to do next, we know that everyone wishes her the best.

Dateline the region: One of the many signs that spring has arrived happened last week with the announcement of the lineup for the Green River Festival. If you’re somehow unfamiliar with this festival, it’s one of the highlights of the summer in Franklin County. It brings a wide range of regional, national and even sometimes international musicians to the campus of Greenfield Community College over the course of two days. Go to the website at to check out who is scheduled to appear. And if you decide to attend, you won’t be disappointed.

Dateline Shelburne Falls: Another movie being filmed in the village? That’s apparently a possibility as filmmakers for “The Judge” scout out locations. It’s good to hear that Shelburne officials are developing a permit process, thus making it better for everyone involved, residents, the town and people associated with the movie. It also sends a signal to the film industry that the village is interested in having its time before the camera.

Dateline Greenfield: A tip of the hat to all those who helped install a new playground at the Academy of Early Learning during the weekend. Volunteer efforts like this help cut down on the costs of installation, therefore saving the town money that can be spent elsewhere as needed. Plus it’s a way to meet people who share some of the same community interests as you do.
