Series at a glance: Franklin County gets up to speed with broadband Internet service

Bringing a multi-million-dollar high-speed Internet system to the front door of every home and business in rural Franklin County has been more dream that practicality — until now. This spring, the state is completing construction of the “middle mile” of a broadband network backbone that will reach to key centers in each county town, enabling towns and private vendors in the next few years to go the “final mile” to your doorstep — bridging the digital divide that becomes ever more important to how we live and do business.

This five-part series takes stock of where we are in changing dream to reality.

Day 1: Rolling out the “middle mile.”

Day 2: How Franklin County has coped with — and in some cases overcome — years of low-speed Internet access.

Day 3: Towns plan for the “final mile.”

Day 4: Unwilling to wait, Leverett and Warwick have gone it alone on the “final mile,” but acknowledge the state and federally funded “middle mile” will still make a big difference in the future.

Day 5: What the future holds.
