GREENFIELD — Police have released the name of the man they believe committed three armed bank robberies in the past month.
Richard C. May, 38, is thought to be on the run after the 277 Federal St. branch of Greenfield Cooperative Bank was robbed by a masked man at gunpoint that afternoon.
Wednesday’s robbery came after the TD Bank on Main Street was robbed on March 3 and Feb. 17, by a masked man with a pistol. Detective Lt. Daniel McCarthy said May is wanted in those robberies as well.
Police said Wednesday that they had a suspect in mind, but did not release his name until Friday.
May has previous armed robbery convictions in eastern Massachusetts and New Hampshire, the first when May, now 38, was 19, according to police.
McCarthy said Greenfield Police have not had prior run-ins with May, who did not have any outstanding warrants before being identified as a suspect Wednesday.
Police suspect May left the county shortly after Wednesday’s hold-up.
“He did have some brief ties in Greenfield, and had been residing here temporarily,” McCarthy said Wednesday.
A white Ford Explorer seen leaving Wednesday’s robbery was found shortly afterward, and McCarthy said the robber had likely switched vehicles.
Police believe May was dropped off in Holyoke, though he has connections in Worcester and Boston as well.
“We don’t have any solid information on where he is right now,” said McCarthy.
Law enforcement agencies across the state have been advised to be on the lookout for May.
McCarthy hopes that releasing the suspect’s identity and photo will help them zero-in on him.
May was last seen wearing gray basketball shorts, a black shirt with the word “enchanted,” and Nike sneakers. He has plug-style earrings in both ears, and tattoos on his right arm.
If convicted, May faces a mandatory minimum 10-year state prison sentence on each count of armed robbery.
Anyone who may know the whereabouts of May, or have other information that could help locate him, may call Greenfield Police detectives Lt. Daniel McCarthy or Todd Clark at 413-773-5411, ext. 1305 or 1316, respectively. Police advise people not to confront or attempt to apprehend May.
