Money could be on way for Whately Town Hall fixes
WHATELY — The town hall restoration and a preservation restriction on River Road are two proposals that could get a cut of $101,246 in community preservation money.
The Community Preservation Committee is holding a public hearing on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the Whately Town Hall for townspeople to weigh in on projects recommended for funding with CPA tax dollars.
The committee has approved three applications for funds totaling $101,246.
The largest is a request to provide about $88,000 for architectural and engineering work for the restoration of Town Hall. A second historic preservation proposal is for $2,000 to fund the archival preservation of five historic cemetery maps. The third project is a request for $11,340 to fund the local share of an Agricultural Preservation Restriction on farmland on River Road.
The Community Preservation Act is statewide legislation allowing cities and towns to adopt a property tax surcharge with the revenues from the surcharge and state matching funds supporting open space preservation, creation of community housing, preservation of historic buildings, and creation of recreational opportunities. In 2008, Whately adopted the CPA. It charges a 3 percent surcharge and gets a 100 percent state match. Townspeople would be able to vote on the proposals at town meeting.
