Greenfield police arrest local man on weapon, drug charges

GREENFIELD — An alleged afternoon fight ended with a Charlemont man’s arrest on charges including assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and drug possession.

At 3:15 p.m. Friday, Greenfield police responded to Chapman Street for a report of a fight. When they got there, the alleged victim, along with witnesses, said that a knife had been brandished during the scuffle. They then pointed to a nearby house, that he’d seen the suspect enter, according to Sgt. Mark Williams.

They arrested Zachariah Chaffee, 31, of 122 Main St., Charlemont, on charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, possession of a class A substance, subsequent offense, possession of a class E substance, assault and battery, and possession of less than one ounce of marijuana, a civil offense.

When they ran Chaffee’s name, police discovered that he had an open warrant, and arrested him on that charge, prompting a search of his person.

“Subsequent to his (warrant) arrest, we discovered a substance believed to be heroin on his person,” said Williams. He said the suspect also had anti-depressant medication on him, resulting in the class E substance charge.

Williams said the class A drug charge stems from two packets of what may be heroin. Lab results are pending. The class E substance charge could be dropped if the suspect can produce a prescription for the pills.

The knife described by witnesses was not found on Chaffee, said Williams, and the suspect denied having one. However, the sergeant said Chaffee admitted to his involvement in the fight.

“He said the other party was the aggressor,” said Williams.

The case is under investigation, and could result in charges against the alleged victim as well.

Williams said it does not appear that the knife was used in the attack, only shown.

“The victim wasn’t stabbed, and he didn’t have any cuts,” he said. The alleged victim did not seek medical attention, said Williams.

Williams said Chaffee had been transported to the Franklin County jail, and is scheduled to be arraigned in Greenfield District Court Monday.
