Letter: Gun violence

As Democrats across our great nation seem bent on trying to strip away many versions of a weapon called an assault rifle, and lower magazines to 10 rounds or less to a possible limitation of just seven rounds, a recent horrific tragedy in the State of Connecticut just proved once again, that this ban will do nothing to stop horrific crimes by the mentally unstable in our society, just as the previous assault weapons ban did nothing to stop the tragedy at Columbine High School in Colorado on April 20, 1999.

There is a complete breakdown of the mental health care system in our country. Now yet again, “two more children in Connecticut are dead because of a person who was mentally ill, not because of a law abiding citizen.” This time, the horrific act and tragedy was perpetrated by the victims’ own grandmother, Debra Denison, who had recorded history of mental illness and bipolar disorder. This now follows the horrific killings that took place at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, which were also committed by a mentally unstable individual who fell though the cracks in the mental health care system in our society.

Sadly in this case, there are two major differences. The killing of the two grandchildren was done with a .38 caliber handgun, and it only took two bullets, before the grandmother turned the weapon on herself, using a third bullet. To all of the people of our nation, the facts speak for themselves. Any kind of assault weapons ban would not have prevented this terrible tragedy. This was committed against two innocent young children with a handgun and it only took two bullets. If you placed any kind of magazine ban into effect, this still would have happened.

Taking away weapons from law-abiding citizens who do things legally is not going to stop the mentally unstable from committing unthinkable crimes. Let us please all pray for the victims of this new tragedy and for the parents who have to live with out their precious children, which for them will be an eternity.
