Letter: Best to Shields
On behalf of the Franklin County Solid Waste District, I want to extend best wishes to Sandy Shields, Greenfield’s DPW superintendent, on the eve of her retirement from public service.
Sandy has worked hard for many years for the betterment of the town and certainly deserves the opportunity for a respite from her workload.
I began to work with Sandy over a decade ago while she was in charge of the wastewater treatment plant. Although Greenfield was not a member town of the Solid Waste District, Sandy and I worked closely on issues ranging from sludge disposal to hazardous waste collections to collections for unwanted medications. When she became the head of the DPW, this association continued and I would often call her for her opinion on a project or issue.
I have a great deal of respect for Sandy’s knowledge, skills, and integrity. Despite the level of management she achieved, she has always been approachable, generous, and kind. I know she went above and beyond to treat her staff as human beings first and employees second.
I commend Sandy for all that she has achieved during her decades of service to the Town of Greenfield. I appreciate her willingness to work with the Solid Waste District as a collaborative partner whenever it was best for both sides. I will certainly miss being able to hear her opinion and ideas interspersed with her good sense of humor.
Best wishes for many years of rest and relaxation. It is certainly well deserved.
