Millionaires oust Eagles, 57-21

LENOX — The Franklin County Technical School girls basketball team knew that Lenox Memorial High School was going to throw a press at them Tuesday night.

But when the whistle blew to start the preliminary-round game of the Western Massachusetts Division III tournament, there was nothing the No. 13 seed Eagles could do to stop the fourth-seeded Millionaires.

In the blink of an eye, Lenox was on top 19-0. The Millionaires never relented, and went on to post a 57-21 win.

“We knew that they were going to press. We worked on it yesterday,” Franklin Tech coach Ed Marvell, “but I think we forgot everything we learned.”

Lenox scored eight of its first 11 points off chances created by steals, and the defensive pressure was unrelenting until Franklin Tech’s Brooke Meuse (six points) drew a foul and went to the line, converting her first chance but missing the second.

“The girls were really nervous,” Marvell said. “We tried to get back focus, but I think the nerves got to us.”

By the end of the first quarter, it was 27-3. At halftime it was 38-8.

Megan Aldrich led the Eagles (10-11) with seven points on the night, while Jasmine Farr-Marcum added six points and Jaime Judge scored two points.

Lenox (13-8) put three players in double digits, including Liz Mitts and Hayden Zinchuk with 14 points apiece and Kathy Prescott with 12.

But while the game got out of hand for the Eagles, Marvell was proud of the fact his team was even there.

“For most of the girls, this is new to them. Playing in the tournament, the atmosphere, coming up to Lenox. It opened their eyes,” Marvell said. “I’m still proud of them. We had a fantastic year, winning the last four games (of the regular season) to get into the tournament. It was good to get here and get this experience.”

The Eagles had seven juniors this season, and Marvell thinks that the experience in Lenox will help them for next year.

“They will have one year of experience now. They’ll learn from this, and they’ll remember what happened tonight,” Marvell said.
