Master plan event moved to Saturday

GREENFIELD — Residents will have another chance to share with town officials and other town leaders what they hope Greenfield will look like in 10 to 20 years.

The community workshop, which will be held Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Four Rivers Charter Public School, 248 Colrain Road, will kick off the Greenfield Sustainable Master Plan effort.

The workshop was supposed to be held on the weekend that Winter Storm Nemo hit, so it was canceled.

The Greenfield Sustainable Master Plan effort will include a review and rewrite by the Planning Board of the town’s current master plan.

The town’s Sustainable Master Plan Committee, which consists of 36 members from all walks of Greenfield life, will be asking participants to share what they appreciate about Greenfield, what areas need improvement, and how people view different issues, like economic development, housing needs, transportation options, and protecting natural and historical resources.

The board will spend about nine months reviewing the current master plan and making changes to update it and add the “sustainable” aspects.

Town officials are hoping to have a new master plan in place by the end of the year.

“Using sustainability as the over-arching theme means that every aspect of the plan will take into account social, economic and environmental issues, and that we create strategies that meet the needs of current and future generations in Greenfield without compromising the systems on which they depend,” said Eric Twarog, the town’s director of planning and development.

A short overview of the project will be presented at the beginning of the workshop, and then participants will have discussions with the entire group, and also break into smaller groups. Organizers said there will be about a dozen “hands-on” activities to participate in throughout the day. The workshop will be the first of three held over the next nine months or so.

Other ways for residents to share ideas include visiting Greenfield Sustainable Master Plan on Facebook, attending committee and subcommittee meetings, and visiting: www.greenfieldmasterplan.com and using MindMixer there.
