Letter: Young skiers

Franklin County Sports Commissioner and Coordinator Jim Ewen took advantage of snowstorm Nemo to host the Sunderland Elementary ski event on the school grounds on Feb. 16. Parents also stepped up as assistant ski instructors for the day, helping the fledgling young skiers get started. Traci Sackrey was instrument in fitting the youngsters with the proper size skis and boots.

The make-shift biathlon course whereas the kids toss short pieces of wooden dowels trying to topple wooden blocks before racing to the finish line provided a unique challenge and fun for the participants. And those who donated skis and boots for this program is most appreciated.

The day could unequivocally be called a success just by the smiles on the faces of those young Nordic skiers. This venue is proof of what can be accomplished through an inclusive community effort.
