Letter: Leadership we need

On March 4, the voters of Orange will be going to the polls. While we have two strong candidates in the race for selectmen, this election is about qualifications, experience and leadership. David Ames is the clear choice.

David grew up in Orange, serving in the Air Force for over 21 years after graduation, returning in 1987 with a wife and family. David has worked as the economic development director in Orange for five years before becoming town administrator for Shutesbury. After serving for five years, David was chosen as town manager in Athol, where he served until his recent retirement. These are the type of qualifications from which Orange can benefit.

David helped to create the Orange Economic Development and Industrial Corp. (EDIC), writing grants that aided in the creation of our Industrial Park to draw business and industry and employment opportunities for area residents, as well as broaden the tax base. One of those grants provided $500,000 to upgrade our Waste Water Treatment Plant. David spearheaded the effort to rezone New Athol Road where numerous businesses have since established. This is the type of experience from which Orange can certainly benefit.

I’ve worked with David in his capacity as town administrator in Shutesbury, as well as in the Town of Athol as town manager on a regional energy project. His quiet, unassuming nature draws in those around him, encouraging collaboration and partnership to get the job done. This is the type of leader Orange desperately needs.

I hope you’ll agree that David is the candidate that will work to bring economic development in support of services that we the residents of Orange desire: quality education, senior services and public safety, including return of streetlights.
