Former GCC adjunct professor will oversee school’s training workshops for area employees

GREENFIELD — Greenfield Community College has hired a former adjunct faculty member to head up its workforce development program, which provides specialized training courses for area employees.

Alyce Stiles, who taught nutrition and chemistry at GCC from 2003 to 2007, has spent the past two decades alternating between education, business and science fields — most recently as a project manager for the Deerfield-based Yankee Candle Co.

In her new role, at a salary in the $53,000 to $60,000 range, Stiles will oversee the college’s workforce development workshops, said Bob Barba, GCC’s dean for community education.

About 1,000 people will sign up and pay for workshops each year through Stiles’ office, often paying between $100 and $800.

Some enroll in the workshops to learn additional skills or earn a certification for their current job, such as a “ServSafe Food Protection Certification” for restaurant and cafeteria workers. Others take classes to help them get back into the work force, said Barba.

In some instances, GCC helps secure state and federal grants that cover the cost of the workshops for local residents, he said.

The entire work-force development program brings in a net income of about $40,000 each year, said Barba.

Stiles’ varied work experience made her a good choice for the job, he said.

“Alyce’s strong background makes her a perfect fit to lead the office that serves as the bridge between the college and employers’ needs for education and training for their employees,” said Barba, in a prepared statement. “She has both first-hand knowledge of area employers’ needs and experience teaching community college students to help fill those needs.”

Stiles, in a prepared statement, said she looks “forward to working as a liaison between the business world and GCC.”

Stiles’ other jobs include stints as a math teacher in Northampton and West Springfield, six years as a research scientist for Kraft Foods in New York and a year as an educational specialist in Texas.

She takes over for Nancy Bair, who retired in December after 12 years in the position.
