Marshal deems Orange house fire as arson

ORANGE — A small fire in an empty Prospect Street house Monday evening was intentionally set, according to the state fire marshal’s office.

Orange police were called to a report of a breaking and entering at 9:40 p.m., with the caller reporting a fire in the rear of the building.

Fire Chief Dennis Annear said the house at 76 Prospect St. was recently vacated and soon to be listed with a real estate agent.

The fire was small and quickly put out by Orange firefighters with one hose, Annear said.

The fire is under investigation by police attached to the fire marshal’s office, and anyone with information is encouraged to call the Massachusetts State Arson Hotline at 1-800-682-9229.

Jennifer Mieth, spokeswoman for the office, said the all-day hotline is confidential and part of the state’s Arson Watch rewards program, offering rewards up $5,000 for information helping to solve arson cases.
