Greenfield hires new police officers

GREENFIELD — The town has hired two new full-time police officers.

Mayor William Martin and Greenfield provisional Police Chief Joseph Burge announced that Jeremy Felton and Emily Rowell, who both recently graduated from the 20th Recruit Officer Course of the Boylston Regional Police Academy in Worcester, have joined the local force.

Felton and Rowell completed a rigorous, 242-hour training program administered by the state’s Municipal Police Training Committee.

“As we rebuild the department, the levels of professionalism and competence can only be maintained with extraordinarily qualified recruits,” said Martin. “This is a fine step forward in building a strong base. Public safety personnel tend to be long-term municipal employees and over time, professionalism, competence and education are paramount for success.”

Martin and Burge said Felton and Rowell are well equipped to provide immediate assistance to the town’s police department.

Burge has said, since he became provisional chief in June, that he plans to build the department back up.

Currently, the department has 18 patrolmen, but one is on light duty and one is on leave. There are also two detectives and one court officer. There are three lieutenants, although one is on leave, and five sergeants. The force also has four part-time officers.

Burge said the force covers three shifts a day, seven days a week.

Felton graduated from Greenfield High School. He has a bachelor’s degree from Westfield State College and a master’s degree from Boston University.

He served in the Air Force in Iraq from 2002 to 2005 and was honorably discharged. He has also been involved in teen sports programs, including as a middle school basketball coach and assistant high school football coach.

Rowell graduated from Frontier Regional School in South Deerfield. She is a paramedic and has served in that capacity most recently in Springfield.

Rowell will be working alongside her cousins, Police Det. Kevin Rowell and officer Christopher Rowell.

Congratulations to the town of Greenfield for hiring two exceptional individuals as police officers. BTW the police academy was 800 hours of intense training for these officers not 242.
