Woman dies in New Salem car crash
NEW SALEM — A single-car accident claimed the life of a driver Friday afternoon.
At about 12:44 p.m. Friday, state police responded to the single-car accident on Route 202 near the high-tension lines.
“A young woman,” the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, was pronounced dead on the scene, according to a state police news release.
Police are not yet releasing the woman’s name, age, or hometown, nor the make and model of the vehicle she was driving, as they were still trying to notify her family Friday evening.
Police said the woman was driving north on Route 202, when she lost control of the car, went off the road, and struck a tree.
Friday evening, the southbound lane of the busy road remained closed, while police continued to investigate the scene.
The state police Detectives Unit, Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, and Crime Scene Service Section are investigating the accident. They were assisted on-scene by the Orange and New Salem fire departments, and Orange Emergency Medical Services.
