Special day planned in Northfield for Saturday

NORTHFIELD — Local crafts, great deals, and live music are just three reasons to check out Special Day in Northfield Saturday.

From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., there will be almost too much to do in and around Northfield’s downtown.

There will be free horse-drawn hayrides, gift-making workshops, and plenty of holiday refreshments.

And, of course, a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus.

Santa Claus will pose for pictures from 11 a.m to 1 p.m. in the Green Trees Gallery showroom, 105 Main St. Bring your own cameras and Christmas lists. Then, Mrs. Claus will read stories by the fireplace from 1 to 3 p.m. at Centennial House, 94 Main St.

There will be plenty of sales at local businesses, and chances to make your own gifts as well.

From 10 a.m. to noon, you can make Swedish woven heart baskets at Dala Bird, 105 Main St. Turn white carnations into snowman decorations from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Fairview Gardens, 8 Main St., or make “upcycled” decorations and pinecone bird-feeders from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Green Trees Gallery. From 1 to 3 p.m., there will be craftmaking workshops for kids and adults at Dickinson Memorial Library, 115 Main Street.

And, also from 1 to 3 p.m., come make a gingerbread man at Mims Market, 60 Main St., while area musicians have an acoustic hoe-down on the porch.

That’s just the tip of the entertainment iceberg.

Songwriter Grainne Buchanan will play guitar and sing originals from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Northfield Coffee and Books, 105 Main St. Next door, members of the Pioneer Valley Symphony will play holiday favorites from 1:30 to 2:15 p.m. in Green Trees Gallery. Ruthanne Paulson’s Cardboard Box Theatre will perform “The Magic Dreidels” from 12:30 to 1 p.m. at the corner of Main Street and Parker Ave.

Free parking is available behind Green Trees Gallery, and a shuttle will provide transportation to and from your car.
