Farm on the move

Brief thoughts on some of the events making news from around Franklin County and the North Quabbin area:

Dateline Hawley: The decision by Sidehill Farm to move and consolidate its operations from a number of rented fields in Ashfield to the site of the former Donovan potato farm, is good news for the farm and for those who have enjoyed their raw milk and other products. It’s also good news for the area’s farming and sustainability advocates. From the story in The Recorder, it sounds like the move will also let the farm move deeper into organic produce. And with the building of a yogurt manufacturing plant in Hawley, there’s going to be more ways to fully enjoy what the farm has to offer.

Dateline Greenfield: A recent Recorder story about some local people involved with an outdoor shower kit has us thinking that it will only be a matter of time before their sales take off. Anyone who has visited Cape Cod or other beach communities may have taken advantage of the outdoor shower, to wash off all the sand before going into the house. But we’ve always thought that outdoor showers could work away from the beach as well. What Kirsten Oxboel and Jim Lobley have come up with takes much of the guesswork out of building one. It certainly sounds like their business is getting noticed, and now it’s just a matter of time.

Dateline Northfield: Kudos to all those at Northfield Mount Hermon School who are involved in the recent mock election project. From its beginnings in 1988, the project is now involved in its seventh presidential election and has grown to include 135 schools and roughly some 50,000 teenage voters. The Voting Opportunities in Every State (VOTES) project sounds like a terrific way to educate students about the electoral process and to get them thinking about what is actually entailed in our democratic system from many different angles. It’s a project that all schools should think about getting involved in.

Dateline the region: With the election just one week away, we’re finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel when it comes to political advertising. As far as we’re concerned, no longer having such ads pollute the radio and television can’t happen soon enough ... and come to think of it, do they ever actually change anybody’s mind?
