Who Romney answers to

Last July moderate Republican David Gergen spoke to a packed house at the Charlemont Federated Church during the Charlemont Forum series. A respected elder who has served both Republican and Democratic administrations, Gergen made on observation that was, for me, the take-way message.

Gergen said, “Left to his own devices, I believe Mitt Romney would be a ‘Massachusetts moderate.’ But Mitt will NOT be left to his own devices; he will be answering to the extreme forces on the right of the Republican party.” He left us with the clear impression that he could not and would not support such a person for President of the United States. And neither can I.
