Mahar opens up on Eagles, 3-1

Kelly LeBlanc finished with six aces and 12 assists and Mahar Regional School defeated Easthampton High School, 25-20, 25-23, 23-25, 25-23, in an independent girls’ volleyball match Tuesday in Orange.

Alysha Rentas finished with three aces and seven digs in the win, Caoilinn Cronin added two aces and five kills, and Sabrina Ladeau chipped in eight kills.

Belchertown 3, Athol 1 — Belchertown High School pulled off a surprise as it bested Athol High School, 25-21, 11-25, 25-22, 25-22, in independent girls’ volleyball action Tuesday at Mallet Gymnasium in Athol.

Brianna Rouleau registered 5 kills and Emily Woodford recorded 5 aces for the Orioles.

Tess Neverett racked up 9 kills, Hope Parker chipped in with 6 kills, Julia Salmond served for 4 aces and Lexi Hamlett dished out 18 assists for the Red Raiders, who learned late last week that head coach Bernie Merron resigned to attend to a personal matter.

“They’re disappointed right now, but we just need to keep going,” said new head coach Amber Parker. “We still have a lot of work to do.”

Athol is at Easthampton High School Thursday at 5 p.m.

Sabis 3, Greenfield 0 — Jazlyn Wonzo recorded 4 assists, 6 aces and 3 digs to lead Sabis International Charter School to a 25-21, 27-25, 25-14 win over Greenfield High School in an independent girls’ volleyball match over

Liz Reed totaled 9 aces, 3 digs and 2 kills, Anya Vartanyan finished with 7 assists and 2 kills, and Ravin Graves added 4 digs for the Green Wave.

Sabis also own the junior varsity match, 25-15, 25-9.

Holyoke 3, FC Tech 0 — Holyoke High School fought off a stiff challenge from Franklin Country Technical School to earn a 27-25, 25-14, 25-21 victory in independent girls’ volleyball play Tuesday at John “Jinx” O’Connor Gymnasium in Holyoke.

Katie Newell led the Eagles with 3 aces, 4 assists and 2 kills. Gabby Roy collected 4 kills, Megan Duga added 7 digs and 2 aces, and Emily Giguere contributed 2 kills and 1 ace.

Franklin Tech hosts Ware High School Thursday at 5 p.m.

South Hadley 3, Mohawk 1 — South Hadley High School struggled to get past an improved Mohawk Trail Regional High School squad, 25-23, 25-23, 22-25, 25-21, in independent girls’ volleyball play Tuesday in South Hadley.

Sammy Marra led the Tigers with 6 aces and 6 aces.

Hayley Lowell had 7 aces and 1 kill for the Warriors, while Olivia Dubrule added 2 aces and 1 assist.

“I was happy with the effort,” said Warriors head coach Bob Mastorakis. “I thought we played really well, but we just had a lot of unforced errors. Both sides had a lot of them.”

Girls’ soccer

Athol 9, Narragansett 3 — Athol High School scored early and often as it rolled to a 9-3 independent win over Narragansett Regional High School in girls’ soccer action Tuesday in Baldwinville.

Tanner Favreau recorded two goals and one assist, while Molly Cleveland and Julia Carey each added a goal and two helpers to lead the Red Raiders, who led 6-1 at halftime. Amber Mahony and Lindsey Hamlett each added a pair of tallies, while Vanessa Baptista also had a goal.

Steph Putnam made 6 saves in goal for Athol, which outshot the Warriors, 23-10.

Athol hosts Hopkins Academy on Thursday at 7 p.m.
