Greenfield oil spill results in lengthy cleanup

GREENFIELD — A trash collection truck spilled more than two dozen gallons of hydraulic fluid on the French King Highway Wednesday afternoon.

According to a Greenfield Fire Department spokesman, a hydraulic line broke on a garbage truck from Triple T Trucking, spilling 28 to 30 gallons of hydraulic oil on a half-mile-long stretch of heavily traveled road. The spill began north of the Silver Street intersection and continued up Loomis Road.

Firefighters diked a nearby storm drain, keeping the oil from entering the stormwater system and potentially flowing into waterways.

Firefighters spread oil absorbent on the spill and the Department of Environmental Protection was called in to help clean up. The DEP spread sand over the spill and used street sweepers to remove the contaminated sand. The cleanup lasted for several hours.

The Fire Department spokesman said the trucking company would have to pay for the cleanup.
