Letter: Helping the homeless

There are currently more than 2,000 homeless families receiving temporary emergency shelter in motels in Massachusetts, including several dozen families in Greenfield. The Franklin County Regional Housing and Redevelopment Authority has a contract with the state to help these families find affordable housing. Many of the families are from Franklin County and want to stay here; others wish to relocate to areas of the state where they have relatives and jobs.

While they are living in the Greenfield motels, we do our best to make sure that they feel safe and welcome, and that they have access to basic necessities such as food, diapers and clothing.

We greatly appreciate the compassion and generosity that members of the community have shown toward homeless families living in Greenfield. To protect the privacy of the families and ensure that all assistance is distributed fairly, we request that those who wish to help contact Charity Day, cday@fcrhra.org or 413-863-9781, ext. 51, rather than dropping donations off at the motels, which do not have the staff or the expertise to do this.
