Bulletin Board: Defending champs win touch-football debut

John Hall threw three touchdown passes, including a pair to Kendall Schneider, and defending champion Travel Kuz opened the Greenfield Men’s Touch Football League season with a 19-14 victory over Between the Uprights Sunday at Green River Field in Greenfield.

Chris Dodge also hauled in a touchdown catch in the win and added an extra point. Hall also had three interceptions to pace the defense, while Sunny Lucas picked off one pass. Ben Banash hooked up with Jake Field for a pair of touchdown passes in the loss. Zach French added a safety.

• In other action, Nick Aldrich threw four touchdown passes as Rocketfusion.com blasted Amherst Militiamen, 26-0.

Tyson Dowdy and Jordan Markham each caught a pair of touchdowns in the win. Markham and CJ Peterson each caught one extra point.

• Meanwhile, Viset Keo threw touchdowns to Danny Mann and Jim Ray as the Northampton Falcons shut out Sirum’s Auto Body, 12-0.

Adam Wroblewski had an interception in the loss.

• Finally, Billy Cruz caught the lone score of the day on a pass from Ryan Kielty as the Northampton Titans edged Taylor’s Tavern Stallions, 6-0.

Jake Lococo, Shawn Parsons and Robert Zues each had interceptions in the loss, and Jeremy Benz and Ben McDonough had a pair of sacks apiece.


CCG women’s

Irene McDonald and Michele Hazlett posted a net score of 24.5 to win the Ryder Cup Two-Person Team Golf Tournament during the Country Club of Greenfield Women’s League Monday night.

Penny Ricketts and Wanda Pyfrom placed second with a 30.5, while Angie Bergquist and Donna Woodcock tied for third with Sherry Chaffee and Nancy Conant 31.

Northfield Skins

John Adams and Bob Ross carded a 37 for low gross in the Monday Night Skins Golf League at Northfield Golf Club.

Shane Foster and Frank Riberio took low net with a 35.

Bob Ross came closest to the pin on No. 6 (10 feet). Frank Riberio was closest on No. 7 (6-0).

Thomas Memorial men’s

Chris Varilly fired a 3-under-par 32 for low gross in the Thomas Memorial Men’s Golf League on Monday night in Turners Falls.

Ed Kerswig Jr. was closest to the pin on No. 7 (9-1).

Garrett Cousineau leads the league with 165 points. Mike Hall is second with 152.

Mark K Memorial

Fred Llewelyn, Sam Modzrzakowski, Kyle Matteson and Alan Blanchard Jr. combined on a low net of 57 in the Mark K Memorial Mixed Golf League on Monday night at Oak Ridge Golf Club in Gill.

Brian Smith, Randy Ward, Walter O’Neil and Tamme Smith were second at 58.

Youth soccer

United open with wins

Quinn McNutt finished with four goals and two assists Sunday as Frontier United crushed Ludlow United, 12-1, in a Pioneer Valley Youth Soccer League Under-9 boys’ division game at Eaglebrook School in Deerfield.

Devin Niles finished with three goals and three assists in the win, while Shane Prusak added two goals and two assists. Jake Petrin finished with one goal and one assist, and Jack Storm and Chan Hee Son each had one goal. Matt Lavoine also added a helper for Frontier.

Theo Balkema finished with four saves in net before being relieved by Lavoine who stopped three shots.

• On Saturday, Hee Son tickled the twine five times as Frontier cruised to a 17-0 win over Hampshire United in Westhampton.

Storm scored four goals for Frontier, while Prusak, Niles and Ben Hudzik each added two goals. McNutt and Petrin each added one goal, and Petrin stopped the only shot he faced to secure the shutout.

Youth field hockey

Union 38 intro program

Deerfield Rec will conduct the Union 38 Introduction to Field Hockey program for girls in grades 3 through 6 from the towns of Deerfield, Whately, Sunderland and Conway.

The focus of the program will be on skill development with game scenarios later in the season.

Sticks, shin guards and balls (with a deposit) will be provided to the first 35 girls who register. Players are encouraged to wear a mouthguard.

Practices will be held on Sundays from Sept. 14 through Oct. 19 from 4 to 5 p.m. at Memorial Field in South Deerfield.

Fees are $10 for registration and $50 for equipment deposit. Parents are asked to write separate checks for each (equipment deposit checks will be returned at the last session, when all equipment is returned).

Road race

Don Maynard Memorial

The 20th annual Don Maynard Memorial 5-mile Road Race and 3-mile Walk will take place on Sept. 20 at 9:30 a.m.

The race begins and ends at the Green River Swimming & Recreation Area in Greenfield.

The first 100 registered participants will get a free T-shirt. Entry fee is $20 for the run and $14 for the walk. Registration forms can be picked up at the YMCA or the Body Shoppe in Greenfield, or by contacting Chuck Adams at 522-6688. Participants can also register online at www.runreg.com.
