Hubbard captures DRIVE Boys’ JV crown
Hubbard Heating & Cooling was crowned champion of the DRIVE Hoops Boys’ Junior Varsity Basketball League on Thursday evening as it defeated Whitney Fencing, 54-51, at Stoneleigh-Burnham School in Greenfield.
Hunter Cote netted 18 points and Mike Menard added 14 for the champions.
Ian Fulton Black drained a game-high 25 and Tucker Llewellyn had 13 for Whitney.
Hunt Memorial Sr. 2-Ball
Bob Linn and Jim Hosey combined for a 6-under-par 66 to win the overall title in the Jon Hunt Memorial Senior Two-Ball golf tournament on Friday at the Country Club of Greenfield.
George Fleischner and Terry Blanchard finished second with a 67.
Fred Gohr and Ed Pedruczny posted a 58 for low net, while Lee Friedrich and Brian Mead tied for second with Bob Diamond and Jay Frost at 61.
In the Fred Couples Division, Jay Rice and Tim Rice posted a 70 for low gross, followed by Dave Cronin and Al Griffin at 72.
Tom Los and Dave Blanchette finisehd with a low net of 62. Gary Stacy and Dave McDonald tied for second with Blake Keedy and Brad Worthley with 63s.
In the Hale Irwin Division, low gross went to Jim Ruschioni and Paul Nunez at 68, while Tom Bergeron and Jack Varner were second with a 69.
Joe Golonka and John Zaniewski shared low net honors with Forbes Byron and Bob Barclay with 63s.
The Greenfield Middle School football team will hold its opening day practice Monday at 5 at Veterans Memorial Field in Greenfield.
Any seventh and eighth graders interested in playing should show up. All players should bring the necessary paperwork to practice, including physical forms. Anyone needing forms can find them on the Greenfield Public Schools website or at the middle school or high school offices.

Deerfield Rec registration
The Deerfield Recreation Department will sponsor youth soccer programs for children in grades K through 6 this fall.

Youth field hockey
Union 38 intro program
Deerfield Rec will conduct the Union 38 Introduction to Field Hockey program for girls in grades 3 through 6 from the towns of Deerfield, Whately, Sunderland and Conway.
The focus of the program will be on skill development with game scenarios later in the season.
Sticks, shin guards and balls (with a deposit) will be provided to the first 35 girls who register. Players are encouraged to wear a mouthguard.
Practices will be held on Sundays from Sept. 14 through Oct. 19 from 4 to 5 p.m. at Memorial Field in South Deerfield.
Fees are $10 for registration and $50 for equipment deposit. Parents are asked to write separate checks for each (equipment deposit checks will be returned at the last session, when all equipment is returned).

Don Maynard Memorial
The 20th annual Don Maynard Memorial 5-mile Road Race and 3-mile Walk will take place on Sept. 20 at 9:30 a.m.
The race begins and ends at the Green River Swimming & Recreation Area in Greenfield.
The first 100 registered participants will get a free T-shirt. Entry fee is $20 for the run and $14 for the walk. Registration forms can be picked up at the YMCA or the Body Shoppe in Greenfield, or by contacting Chuck Adams at 522-6688. Participants can also register online at www.runreg.com.
The third annual “Your First Mud Run” will take place Sept. 28 at Holyoke Community College at 10 a.m.
The race covers two miles and features numerous obstacles such as wall climb, tires, jump ropes and a mud pit. The event is open to the whole family and is a good practice for those interested in running something larger, such as the Tough Mudder or Spartan Race. Every participant will get a T-shirt and a medal, and pictures and other gear will be available.

Boys’ 7 on 7 tourney
The Fall Face-Off 7-on-7 boys’ lacrosse tournament will be held Oct. 5 at Indoor Action Sports in Greenfield.
It will feature separate High School Varsity and Junior Varsity divisions. Each team will be guaranteed three games, plus the opportunity for playoffs, with certified officials for each game.
Entry fee is $500 per team.

PV pole vault school
The Pioneer Valley Pole Vault School in Bernardston is open by appointment for individual and group lessons through the fall with negotiable rates.
