Bulletin Board: Pedigree vs. Bross in Wood-Racket final

It will be Steve Pedigree against Trevor Bross in the finals of the Greenfield Wood Racket Tennis Tournament tonight.

Both men won their semifinal match on Tuesday night to advance to tonight’s title game at 5:30 at the Beacon Field Tennis Courts in Greenfield.

Pedigree defeated Rick Miner 6-2, 7-5, while Bross knocked off Tim Prevost, 6-1, 6-4.

Miner and Prevost will play in a round-robin for third place against Tuesday night’s consolation-bracket winners, Byron Caplice and Matt Howell. The four men will square off tonight also at Beacon Field. Caplice defeated Paul Beaulieu 6-2, 6-2 in one consolation match, while Howell bested Brian Campbell, 6-3, 6-3, in the other consolation.

Golf

Tuesday Ladies League

Phyllis Canon shot a 78 to win low gross over 18 holes of golf during the Tuesday Morning Ladies League at the Country Club of Greenfield.

Anne Lyman won low net with a 61. Teresa Varner won low gross for the front nine holes with a 42, while Kathie Fahey won low gross for the back nine with a 45. Mary McNally won low net for the front nine with a 32, and Alane Smith and Barb Killeen tied for low net for the back nine with a 36.5.

Edge Hill Men’s

Matt Vandale shot a 38 to capture low gross in the A Division of the Edge Hill Golf Course Men’s League Tuesday in Ashfield.

Justin Mickiewicz was closest to the pin on No. 8 at 18 feet, 9 inches. Jeremy Kingsbury won low net with a 31 and also led the point quota at plus-7.

Peter Zale won low gross in the B Division with a 42. Tim Miner and Charlie Plesnar took low net with a 32, and Miner and Tom Lively led the point quota at plus-5.

Matt’s Men’s League

George Handschuh was closest to the pin on No. 9 at 3 feet, 4 inches, which helped him shoot a low gross score of 36 during the Matt’s Men’s League at Thomas Memorial Golf & Country Club in Turners Falls on Tuesday.

Jon Snow took low net with a 31. Ken Graves was closest to the pin on No. 7 at 26-9. Rick Kimball and Russ Kimball won the second half of the season with 34 points, while Handschuh and Snow came in second with 31.5 points. Matt Betsold and Dave Keppler finished third with 30.5 points.

EDGE Tournament

Luke Poulsen, Eric Pratt, Jake Willis and Brad Hastings shot a 10-under 62 to win the eighth annual EDGE Golf Tournament at Oak Ridge Golf Club over the weekend in Gill.

Brad Letourneau, JD Gexler, Noah Harrison and Brian Deane came in second with a 66, and Cody Snow, Justin Bourbeau, Brian Frank and Brad Penniman took third with a 67.

Mike Doyle won the men’s long drive, Kerri Lapointe won the women’s long drive, and Bourbeau won the closest-to-the-pin competition. The winning team donated their prize money to Indira Wiles of Turners Falls, a 3-year-old battling leukemia.

Miscellany

Belanger fundraiser

The 11th annual Greg Belanger Memorial Scholarship fundraiser is scheduled for Saturday at the South Deerfield Polish Club.

Belanger was a 24-year-old Army officer serving in Iraq with the 325th Military Intelligence Battalion when killed in action on Aug. 27, 2003. The vehicle he was riding in was struck by an improvised explosive device near Hallia.

Over the years, his family has raised thousands of dollars in his memory to help his graduates from alma mater, Frontier Regional School, pay for college tuition. This afternoon’s event begins at 4 p.m. and will include dinner, drink and raffles.

The Greenfield Middle School football team will hold its opening day practice Monday at 5 at Veterans Memorial Field in Greenfield.

Any seventh and eighth graders interested in playing should show up. All players should bring the necessary paperwork to practice, including physical forms. Anyone needing forms can find them on the Greenfield Public Schools website or at the middle school or high school offices.

Youth soccer

Deerfield Rec registration

The Deerfield Recreation Department will sponsor youth soccer programs for children in grades K through 6 this fall.

Registration will be held Aug. 28 and Sept. 2 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Town Hall in South Deerfield. Registration forms can also be found online at www.deerfieldma.us.

Registration fee is $50 per child.

Youth field hockey

Union 38 intro program

Deerfield Rec will conduct the Union 38 Introduction to Field Hockey program for girls in grades 3 through 6 from the towns of Deerfield, Whately, Sunderland and Conway.

The focus of the program will be on skill development with game scenarios later in the season.

Sticks, shin guards and balls (with a deposit) will be provided to the first 35 girls who register. Players are encouraged to wear a mouthguard.

Practices will be held on Sundays from Sept. 14 through Oct. 19 from 4 to 5 p.m. at Memorial Field in South Deerfield.

Fees are $10 for registration and $50 for equipment deposit. Parents are asked to write separate checks for each (equipment deposit checks will be returned at the last session, when all equipment is returned).
