Athol gets $1M grant for business park
ATHOL — The Legislature has passed a bill that includes $1 million for construction of a business park in town.
This is in addition to an earlier $1 million state grant and $2.065 million Athol has committed to the North Quabbin Business Park.
The project, which has already started, is expected to include an 80,000-square-foot Market Basket and an additional 100,000 square feet in restaurant and retail space. The plan also includes the development of 35 acres of land by Athol LLC and is expected to feature a new hotel and 100,000 square feet of commercial space.
“This funding, along with the MassWorks grant, will combine with funds already raised by the Town to finish this project,” said state Sen. Stephen Brewer, who advocated for the most recent grant as chairman of the Senate Ways and Means Committee. “The businesses that will set up shop here — including Market Basket — will bring with them much-needed tax revenue and about 600 new jobs.”
The bill will now go to the governor for his signature. If an item in the bill is vetoed, the Legislature will be unable to override because a two-thirds vote is required and formal sessions ended July 31.
