Letter: Blame the sparrows

Blame the sparrows

The reason the boxes were taken down (along River Road in South Deerfield at the University of Massachusetts farms) was that house sparrows had taken over every single box. House sparrows are non-native and are EXTREMELY aggressive finches. They kill babies and adult birds and takeover the nest boxes.

Those boxes had become a breeding factory for the sparrows. Unless the sparrows are shot or trapped out there is no point in having the boxes.
