Letter: Recyclable plastics

Thank you for calling attention to the need for greater education about plastic bottles, which are made from the most recyclable plastic in the world — polyethylene terephthalate, or PET. These are the bottles that feature the #1 recycling code.

PET’s carbon footprint is one of the smallest among container materials, and virtually every municipal recycling program in North America accepts PET bottles and containers. More than 1.5 billion pounds of used PET is collected in the U.S. each year for recycling, and Americans recycle more than 1 million single-serve PET water bottles every hour. In total, nearly 40 percent of all single-serving PET water bottles are collected and recycled into products like carpeting, clothing, auto parts and recycled food and beverage containers.

Recycling is critical to the conservation of raw materials. The most effective way to reduce litter and increase the sustainable use of PET is to dispose of bottles and containers in the recycle bin, not the trash can.
