Letter: A great festival

This year’s Green River Festival was a huge success, selling out in advance with attendance of over 6,000 per day. All of us at Signature Sounds are so grateful for our supportive community and loyal festival-goers. This year was Signature’s first year producing the event and it was important that we prove ourselves worthy successors to the Franklin County Chamber Of Commerce who have produced the festival since its inception in 1986. Ann Hamilton, Marian Noga, and Sandra Maki deserve a huge round of applause for their commitment to this great event over the years and in helping us make this transition a smooth one.

Greenfield Community College has hosted the festival since the beginning and provides us not only with a beautiful setting, but also with a committed staff who work long hours to ensure that the festival runs smoothly. Big thanks to President Bob Pura, Regina Curtis, Bill Mayrose and the GCC staff for their help. We also get great support from the Greenfield and state police, The Greenfield Fire Department, Bay State Franklin Medical Services, The FTRA, The Greenfield Recreation Department, and many other community organizations.

We couldn’t make this event happen without our tireless staff and the help of over 250 volunteers who are the backbone of the operation. Special thanks are due to volunteer chief Shirley Holmes for pulling it all together.

Financial support is also key and this year 18 local businesses became Green River Festival sponsors.

We are committed to having the Green River Festival showcase the best this area has to offer in food, arts and community. We are also working toward becoming a totally green event. This year our recycling crew under the direction of Montserrat Archbald composted more than 1.25 tons of waste, more than 50 percent of the trash generated at the festival.

Special thanks are due to The Recorder and Daily Hampshire Gazette for their great coverage of the festival and helping us create excitement throughout the community. We look forward to continuing this great local tradition for years to come.
