Orange launches work-off program for seniors

Orange — A new Senior Work Off Program was launched July 1 in Orange. The program, approved at town meeting and voted through at last month’s Board of Selectmen meeting, is a way for seniors to work for the town in order to pay down their tax bill.

Selectman David B. Ames says the program will not only help out senior residents, but benefit the town as well.

The parameters for the program have been set under the guidance of the Department of Revenue. Although asset and income-based requirements can be set for such a program, the selectmen chose not to restrict participants in that way at this time.

Requirements can be reviewed and re-established in the future, but right now the selectmen feel the program is better served being open to all seniors.

Once a position is applied for and assigned to a participant, the individual will receive a minimum wage credit of $8 an hour. The maximum hours allowed to work are 125.

The work-off program will limit compensation to the $1,000 per hours capped, or the individual’s annual tax bill, whichever is less.

Intake for the program will be handled through the Orange Council on Aging. Currently the town is working on brochures for the program which will be available at the town hall and the Council. Town Administrator Diana Schindler says a complete job listing is being worked up as well. This way an individual can apply for a specific position and skill sets can be aligned.

Each job opening will have its own interview process. Further information can be obtained by contacting the Town Hall or the Council on Aging.
