Letter: Pipeline resistance
I think Mayor William Martin, Gov. Deval Patrick and other professional politicians are too quick to accept offers of “economic renewal” from any proposed gas pipeline company of which Kinder Morgan is only one. Extreme vigilance is needed by all of us who reside in western Mass. (and elsewhere) to resist their tactics and promises.
More research is needed on the potentially serious environmental effects that compressors and other unmanned infrastructure would impose on our precious resources, that, frankly, we often take too much for granted: clean air, clean water and uncontaminated land.
Public evacuation plans will also be needed, not to mention provisions for security to protect surrounding populations. It’s time to think about the cost of all this and whether we’re prepared to deal with all the hype and untruths presented by the parent company. Time is of the essence — the time to consider and act is now.
