Calderwood lays out goals for Greenfield school board

GREENFIELD — Creating a realistic and honest budget, forging good relations with the school superintendent and openness to the public are just a few of the many goals and priorities new Greenfield School Committee Chairwoman Maryelen Calderwood ticked off at Wednesday’s meeting.

“I look at it as a time for transition, reassessment and reaffirmation,” Calderwood said.

“It’s a time to solidify a good working relationship with those who teach and creating boundaries and open doors in others.”

Calderwood was elected to serve as chair for a term that ends in 2017.

Calderwood’s chairmanship marks a year of transition and just one of many leadership changes. Superintendent Jordana Harper is also new to her role this year. Harper can expect to get a “baptism by fire” as she quickly has to implement training for teacher evaluations this summer and administer either the MCAS or new PARCC exams, depending on what the School Committee chooses.

One of Calderwood’s goals is establishing a good relationship with the superintendent.

Calderwood also aims to improve communication; Calderwood and Harper met on July 3 to discuss tactics.

Calderwood suggests having additional public comment at meetings. She said the School Committee will be “cognizant of what the press reports” and what the school committee reports to the public. She also said the School Committee will receive information at least 48 hours before a meeting to make an informed decision and be updated on key personnel changes.

Calderwood also aims to create a “realistic and honest budget” and support arts, math and science curriculum.
