Summer fundraisers to support Mahar sports
ORANGE — The school year may be over, but that doesn’t mean some students at Mahar aren’t still hard at work. Members of the football and volleyball teams are gearing up for fundraisers to keep the teams going and cut costs for necessities like training and uniforms. Two events are coming up at the end of the month, including the Senators road race for the volleyball team and a helmet drive for the football team.
The eighth annual Senators road race was approved at a recent Board of Selectmen’s meeting and will help fund tournament fees and player uniforms. The 5K race for the Mahar varsity volleyball team will take place on July 26. at 9 a.m. and will travel the same route as last year, with the start and finish at Mahar Regional School.
The first 30 people to register will receive T-shirts and preregistration is available by picking up a form at Mahar, Trails Head or the Athol YMCA. The event will be held rain or shine and registration will also be available to participants on race day.
Additionally, the Mahar high school touchdown committee and booster club will be holding a helmet drive. Motorists will be asked to support the team with donations when driving through the center of town.
All helmet drive donations will go towards Mahar football team players participating in a camp taking place in Gardner this August. Funds will be split between team attendees and used to offset a $90 camp fee per person.
