Buck helps fuel Post 81 4-2 win
Mark Buck singled home the go-ahead run in the eighth inning and Greenfield Post 81 went on to 4-2 victory over Wilbraham Post 286 in a Hampden County American Legion Baseball game Thursday night at Farrell Field in Wilbraham.
Jake Elwell and Niko Ames drew consecutive walks to lead off the eighth, then Buck — who had twice failed to get a sacrifice bunt down during his at-bat — lined a single to right field to score Elwell and advance Ames to third. After a strikeout, an attempted pickoff throw to third got away and Ames scampered home with an insurance run.
Greenfield (8-2) scored the first run in the fifth on Jourdan York-Welcome’s run-scoring single, then it upped the lead to 2-0 in the sixth on Andrew Doty’s RBI groundout.
Wilbraham (3-7) battled back and caught a few breaks to tie it — they scored on wild pitches in the sixth and seventh innings to force extra frames.
Buck led the Greenfield offense with three hits, while York-Welcome slapped two singles and Ames had the only other hit.
Sam Downes, who came on in the seventh and suffered a blown save, regrouped and pitched a scoreless eighth to pick up the win. He struck out two and walked two. Parker Hickey started and went six solid innings, striking out four and walking two. They combined to allow Wilbraham only four singles on the evening.
Tyler Tongue struck out seven and walked four in the complete-game loss.
“We’ll take it,” said Post 81 coach Tim Capuano of the win. “We played much better defense (tonight).”
Greenfield goes right back on the road this evening when it faces Westfield Post 124 at Westfield State University at 5:45 p.m.
