Dakin opens kitty nursery in Springfield
The Dakin Humane Society has opened a kitten nursery at its Springfield location on Union Street, according to Leslie Harris, executive director of the agency that also has a location in Leverett.
The nursery has been designed to provide intensive care to at-risk newborn kittens.
The Nicholas J. Piepul Kitten Nursery is named for the cat of Jan and Bernadette Piepul of Springfield, who have agreed to fund supplies for the unit for its initial year of existence. Additional support came from contributors to Dakin’s Buddy Fund, which earmarks donations for homeless animals with medical complications.
“This is a remarkable step forward for Dakin,” said Harris. “We will have the only kitten nursery in all of New England. We have already taken in some initial patients and between the resources at hand and the talent and dedication of the donors, staff and volunteers, we’ve seen gratifying results.”
Harris added, “The timing of the nursery coming online is really perfect, as late spring is the peak of kitten seasons.”
Dakin Humane Society provides shelter, education, advocacy and assistance for animals and people in need from its two locations in Springfield and Leverett.
