Hard cider an easy historic topic to warm up to
GREENFIELD — New England’s historic tradition of making and consuming hard cider will be discussed at the Historical Society of Greenfield on Thursday.
Judith Maloney of the West County Cider Co. in Colrain will speak at the Society at 43 Church St. at 7 p.m.
Maloney’s talk will cover the hard cider tradition in New England and in our area.
West County Co. Cider was the first licensed and artisanal hard cider operation in the Pioneer Valley, begun in 1984 by Judith and Terry Maloney. The pair also established the popular Franklin County Cider Days. Hard cider is steadily regaining the popularity it once had as a standard colonial beverage.
Maloney will cover cider’s many variations: from European and American apples, of different colors, of differing alcoholic content, and from dry to sweet.
