GREENFIELD — The town will begin this week raising the money it needs for its Fourth of July celebration.

Christy Moore, the town’s recreation director, said there will be donation cans in local businesses, and volunteers will once again be on Main Street asking for donations.

Moore said the Recreation Department needs to raise $18,000. “We always do it,” said Moore. “I’m hoping it’s the same this year.”

She said if more than $18,000 is raised, it will go toward next year’s celebration. She said the cost of the fireworks display has not gone up since she began as recreation director in several years. Moore said the department does not receive funding from the town for the fireworks display, so it must rely completely on donations.

The town’s Fourth of July celebration includes live music, vendors, games and activities and a fireworks display. It will be held on Beacon Field on July 5 from 4 to 10:30 p.m. The rain date is July 6.

She said members of the Greenfield Recreation Department, the town’s Recreation Commission, as well as other volunteers, will be at the intersection of Main and Federal streets later this week to collect fireworks donations.

“We love that we’ve kept the fireworks alive in Greenfield,” she said. “It’s all because of the generosity of so many.”

Fireworks will begin July 5 at about 9:30 p.m.

Donations may also be sent to: Greenfield Recreation Fireworks Fund, 20 Sanderson St., Greenfield, MA 01301.
