Letter: Mail security

I have read the paragraph several times:

“Though tampering with mailboxes is a federal offense, Postal Inspector Bernadette Lundbotim said the post office will not pursue charges. Since the mailboxes were each valued at less than $250, their theft is a misdemeanor under state law.”

What of the mail? Are we so caught up in the value of the boxes that we have forgotten the broken trust and disrespect for those who owned them? Is our mail of no consequence to this vandalism? Have we lost the right to believe our mail is safe? I certainly hope not.
