Letter: Build a botanical garden
I think that the nine-hole golf course in Greenfield should be turned into a botanical garden if the town secures ownership of the property. I talked with a number of patrons at local restaurants and they all seemed to be enthusiastic about the idea.
Boothbay Harbor, Maine, and Northeast Harbor, Maine, have botanical gardens that attract many visitors. Ultimately, the visitors/tourists generate significant revenue for local businesses.
There are a number of grants available, local garden clubs and volunteers to help finance such an ambitious beautification project. A concrete barrier could also be constructed along the river bank to help protect the land from potential flood damage.
A botanical garden in Greenfield would be a great tourist attraction like the Bridge of Flowers in Shelburne Falls. It would enhance the beauty of the area and help to boost the local economy.
Thank you for your consideration.
