GREENFIELD — An anonymous donor has replaced the Police Department’s golf cart with an all-terrain vehicle and trailer, for patrolling events and getting police and equipment to the less car-friendly reaches of town.

“A lot of people don’t realize how much of the area of Greenfield is not accessible,” said Lt. William Gordon.

Lost hikers and the people who occasionally run from police into the woods are among the demographic the department hopes to reach with the four-wheeler. It will also be used to patrol the county fair and the twice-yearly Wormtown rock music festivals, where it has already been used, Gordon said.

Gordon said the donation of the four-seat Polaris Ranger ATV and trailer was by a man known locally for philanthropy, Gordon said.
