CONWAY —The weather is warming up. Memorial Day has come and gone. And it is just about time to take a summer swim in the Conway Swimming Pool.

But don’t lather on the sunscreen just yet.

While the Conway Community Swimming Pool Inc. readied for a May opening of the swimming hole, townspeople have to wait a few more weeks.

The nonprofit group, which owns the pool, is finishing up beach and accessibility construction during June and now expects a late June opening. Until then, the pool remains closed.

“Summer is almost here and everyone is anxious to use the pool. Mother Nature has thrown us a few curve balls with an early frost, a harsh winter, and a spring with excessive snowmelt and rain. While the dam construction was completed in the fall, we ask for your patience as we finish up the beach and accessibility construction during the month of June,” the pool trustees said in a statement on their website.

Committee members did not return calls for comment.

The trustees are also asking people to stay off the grass until they remove the boundaries later this year. The trustees said one of the most critical parts of the project is allowing grass and vegetation to grow.

The pool, off Whately Road, has been closed since the fall of 2010, when the pool committee discovered bypass and sinkhole issues with the earthen dam that impounds Pumpkin Hollow Brook.

Over the past year, the committee, which has run the man-made swimming hole since 1950, raised $555,579 to repair the dam and make the pool handicapped accessible.
