Hawley election recount Thursday

HAWLEY — A voter recount is scheduled for the recent selectman’s election on Thursday at 1 p.m. in the Town Office.

The May 5 annual town election results were contested by selectmen’s candidate Hussain A. Hamdan, who lost the election to incumbent Selectman John Sears by six votes. Hussain submitted a recount petition to the town clerk and also voiced other complaints in filing for a recount.

According to Town Clerk Pamela Shrimpton, the public will be allowed to sit in a separate area of the Town Office during the recount, and each selectmen’s candidate is allowed to have two representatives watching over the recount proceedings. If one of these representatives questions any particular ballot during the tallying, they are to speak up; the questionable ballot would then go to the three registrars present, who will determine whether the ballot is valid.

After the counting, the results will be announced, with the outcome determining “the definite winner,” Shrimpton said.
