Letter: Pipeline choice
Richie Davis described on May 17 how the pipeline would bring jobs to the area. These would be temporary jobs, lasting perhaps a few months, paid for by increases in our electric rates lasting many years. The benefits of the pipeline may also last but will be enjoyed mainly by Kinder Morgan. The pipeline comes at a disastrous cost to the environment. A far better option is to support increases in the gas tax. This will provide jobs lasting many years and provide benefits we will all enjoy in safer and faster highways. Efficient transportation is also the most important single thing we can provide to maintain a favorable business environment. This November you can support job growth as well as your safety and comfort by backing the new gas tax and refusing efforts to repeal the gas tax increases approved by our Legislature. You also can act today by asking your representatives in Washington to increase support for the highway trust fund. The choice is simple: invest in temporary jobs and a dangerous future or permanent jobs and a much safer ride.
