Greenfield’s first First Friday event set for downtown tonight

GREENFIELD — The Greenfield Business Association and its members will hold the first First Friday Greenfield tonight, offering special deals, music, entertainment and more to shoppers who venture downtown between 5 and 8 p.m.

The First Friday will happen each month with the goal of bringing more people downtown.

Twenty-four downtown merchants will participate in the event, which will also include a photo exhibit at John Doe Jr. Used Records at 269 Main St. and street performances throughout the downtown, while participating restaurants will offer specials.

Shoppers should look for the decorated “poet’s seats” outside of participating stores and restaurants.

Mary Walsh-Martel, owner of Magical Child on Main Street, said there will be words on each chair.

“Shoppers will take words from 10 chairs and write a poem — the winner will receive $50 in Greenfield Dollars,” said Walsh-Martel.

“I’m typically open until 6 on Friday night,” she said. “Hopefully, this will bring people downtown and keep them there later into the evening.”

Walsh-Martel said the idea is to revive the downtown with fun events each month.

“We’re hoping that people come downtown for dinner and then do a little shopping,” said Walsh-Martel. “We’re bringing a little of the arts into it, too.”

“I think this is only the beginning,” said Tamara Beauregard, vice president of Wilson’s Department Store on Main Street. “We are normally open until 8 on Friday, but we’re thrilled that so many others will be joining us, now.”

Beauregard said good deals and a lively downtown should attract more foot traffic on Friday evenings.
