2014 Poet's Seat Poetry Contest: “Be Free” by Jenna Hackett
We battle, breed.
He fans over me.
The lessons I learn from the books I read,
He kills them.
His yellow teeth drag against an apple.
I kicked him out like a stray two years ago.
But the scars inflicted are permanent,
The revenge is anything but inevitable.
Young poet, top two 12- to 14-year-olds
